The Employment Bureau provides an Introductory Service between Employer and potential job seeker. It operates every Tuesday morning from 9-11am.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
You need to come in on the day and see one of the consultants who’ll take you through the process. But briefly it goes like this:
You tell the consultant what you require (full time / part time, live in/live out, child minder / care giver / gardener etc) and she’ll look through the cards of the ladies / men there on the day. She’ll try to find up to 5 who best match your criteria and call them through.
You’ll interview them there and then, one at a time. Once you’ve made a short list, you must then contact the references to 1. Check that all is as the previous employer has said it is 2. You may have specific questions that are not answered by the letter of reference. All the job seekers must have an ID book or be legally allowed to work here if they’re foreigners. They must all have contactable written references. The Employment Bureau ensures that they have these, but does not check / validate them. You’ll be expected to do that.
Should you decide to employ one of the candidates, the Employment Bureau asks for a donation. Currently the usual amount is about R100.
For Job Seekers
You need to come to the church by 9am and be available to wait till 11am each week till you get a job. For your first time you must bring your ID book and a legitimate letter of reference which must have the name of your previous employer and their current telephone number. You will join the queue to register and wait your turn. A consultant will interview you, read your letter of reference and ask you some questions. There after you will be given a Number. This you must not lose.
The next time you come you will stand in the other queue and give the lady your Number who will pull out your card. This will be taken to the back office for the consultants there to look through when the employer come.
